Hyun Jo

Ms. Jo is a Piano Instructor, Accompanist, and Music Therapist, and above all, a lover of music! Ever since she started playing the piano at four years old, music has always been an integral part of her life as a primary means of communication with people and the world. With a BA in Piano Performance from Seokyeong University in Seoul, South Korea, she applied her theoretical and performative training in classic music to other genres, even including improvisation, in her pursuit of a MA in Music Therapy at Sookmyung Women's University in Seoul. Years of clinical experience in various settings, during and after her graduate studies, helped her to understand clients and students on a deeper level, and to believe in the formative power of music for them. This allowed her to develop her own pedagogy for piano education, as well as for music education in general. Ms. Jo came to the United States in 2009 and completed the requirements for music therapy certification at the Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy at NYU in New York, with various clinical sessions done as an integral part of the program. Afterwards, she earned her post-MA in Music Therapy from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA. Since 2001, as a piano instructor, Ms. Jo has continued to work with students of various ages and skill levels. She loves accompanying them on their musical journey from providing them with a strong theoretical understanding through faithful interpretation of musical pieces to enjoying the music in play and reflection. Some of her students have even created music of their own, through both composition and improvisation. Currently, Ms. Jo teaches virtual classes on piano improvisation at Sookmyung Women’s University and Methodist Theological University in South Korea. Please see her performance below.
